Why The Athletic Believes Tuli Tuipulotu is a Breakout Candidate in 2024

Tuli Buzz Updated

In a room with the likes of Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree, Chargers second-year outside linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu has still managed to generate a lot of buzz surrounding his name.

It's for good reason after a solid rookie season — but some believe Tuipulotu could be on the verge of something even bigger in 2024.

The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner took on the task of identifying second-year players that could have breakout years this upcoming season.

Tuipulotu was one of his four defensive linemen selected, as he believes the Bolts edge rusher has a chance to really shine in Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter's new scheme.

Baumgardner wrote:

He had a really good rookie season… However, the quick and smart 6-3, 260-pounder now gets to work with Jesse Minter in an offshoot of the Ravens' system. Look for the Chargers to heap more on his plate and unlock more than we've seen. He could be a star in that defense.

Tuipulotu put up 4.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and 12 quarterback hits in his rookie season. He was also second among rookie edge rushers with 51 total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

The 2023 second-rounder has picked up where he left off during this year's training camp and in the first preseason game by showing off his disruptive nature in both the run and the pass.

He's expressed more confidence heading into Year 2 and with those around him feeling much of the same, he could be primed for a big second season.

"I've felt way more relaxed," Tuipulotu said earlier this week. "I think I have a little bit more confidence going in. Especially when everyone around you has confidence also, the leaders, you go out there and just play ball. You know your guys got you and I got them too.

Tuipulotu added: "A lot of confidence going into this year."
