Los Angeles Chargers to Host 2025 Regular-Season Game in São Paulo

On The Wire (NEW)

The Los Angeles Chargers have been selected as the NFL's designated team for the second-ever regular-season game in São Paulo, Brazil as part of the 2025 International Games, the NFL announced today. With the team's appearance in São Paulo next season, the Chargers will become the first NFL franchise to play games on five continents and just the fourth to play games in seven different countries.

"It's an honor to once again represent the NFL on an international stage," said Chargers President of Business Operations A.G. Spanos. "It's also a tremendous opportunity to help grow the game and bring the Chargers brand to millions of sports fans across Brazil and Latin America. One of the great countries of the world, Brazil is as vibrant, dynamic and culturally diverse as anywhere on the planet, and we cannot wait to experience the warmth and passion of its people during our visit."

Los Angeles returns to international play six years after hosting the Kansas City Chiefs at Mexico City's iconic Estadio Azteca in 2019. The Bolts have also played a pair of regular-season games at London's Wembley Stadium — one in 2018 against Tennessee and one in 2008 against New Orleans.

In the first-ever NFL game played outside of North America in 1976, the Chargers faced the Cardinals in the preseason at the Mainichi Star Bowl in Tokyo. Nearly two decades passed before the team traveled abroad again, appearing in three preseason games in the NFL's American Bowl series from 1996 through 1999, playing in Berlin (Aug. 1994 vs. New York Giants), Tokyo (July 1996 vs. Pittsburgh) and Sydney (Aug. 1999 vs. Denver).

The Bolts' opponent, along with the kickoff time of the Week 1 contest at Corinthians Arena on Fri., Sept. 5, will be announced in conjunction with the release of the full 2025 NFL schedule this spring. The matchup will mark the Chargers' eighth international game ever and fourth during the regular season.
