The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms on a contract extension with outside linebacker Khalil Mack.
Mack is among the most decorated defensive players in football, having been named the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. He is a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, including three times as a Charger, and a three-time first-team All-Pro from The Associated Press. Mack is a four-time AFC Defensive Player of the Week winner and has won Defensive Player of the Month three times, winning each once with the Chargers in 2023.
A team captain in all three seasons with the Bolts, Mack started all 50 regular-season games with Los Angeles over the last three seasons. After a career year in 2023, he was a key piece of the 2024 Chargers defense that led the NFL in points allowed per game (17.7) and was the most stringent in the red zone, allowing just 18 touchdowns on 40 red zone drives. Mack has registered at least six sacks in each of the last 10 seasons, the longest active streak and tied for the second-longest over the last 20 seasons.
Mack's career season in 2023 saw him eclipse 12 sacks, joining Hall of Fame linebacker Kevin Greene as the only players with 12-plus sacks for three different franchises since 1982. He ranked fourth in the NFL with a career-high and single-season franchise-record 17 sacks. Mack turned in a record-setting performance with six sacks in the team's Week 4 win over Las Vegas, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and joining Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas as the only players with multiple performances of five-plus sacks since individual sacks began being tracked in 1982. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors in November 2023 after leading the league with six sacks and two strip-sacks during the month.
Originally the No. 5 overall selection by the Oakland Raiders in 2014, Mack has started 166-of-167 career regular-season games with the Raiders, Bears and Chargers. The 11-year veteran has recorded 107.5 sacks, 630 tackles (462 solo), three interceptions, 185 quarterback hits, 142 tackles for loss, 32 forced fumbles and 13 recoveries in his career. In his second pro season in 2015, Mack became the first player ever to be named an AP first-team All-Pro at two different positions — defensive end and outside linebacker. That year, he posted a career-high 23 tackles for loss and added 15 sacks, including five in a single game. Mack has started all five career postseason games played, registering 28 tackles (19 solo), three sacks and seven tackles for loss.
