The Los Angeles Chargers today claimed safety Marcus Maye off waivers. In a corresponding move, the team placed cornerback Eli Apple Reserve/Injured.
Maye joins the Chargers after appearing in 11 games this season, including three starts, for the Miami Dolphins. He recorded 30 tackles (13 solo), a tackle for loss and a pass defensed for the Dolphins. Originally a second-round selection (39th overall) by the New York Jets in the 2017 NFL Draft, Maye has started 80-of-88 career games with the Jets, Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. In eight pro seasons, he has posted 435 (299 solo), 4.5 sacks, eight interceptions, 29 passes defensed, 13 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and a recovery. The Melbourne, Fla., native had his best season in 2020, when he started 16 games for the Jets and registered single-season career highs in tackles (88), sacks (two), interceptions (two), passes defensed (11), tackles for loss (four), forced fumbles (two) and fumble recoveries (one).
In four collegiate seasons (2013-16) at the University of Florida, Maye was a first-team All-America selection as a junior by USA Today before earning Associated Press second-team All-Southeastern Conference recognition as a senior. A key contributor on defense and special teams, he totaled 210 tackles (124 solo) tackles over 45 career games for the Gators, adding seven tackles for loss, a sack, five interceptions, 22 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and a pair of recoveries.
