Chargers Exercise Fifth-Year Option on Melvin Gordon

The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Wedesday that they've picked up the fifth-year option on Melvin Gordon.

The 6-2, 215-pound running back is fresh off a career-year in which he ranked among the top at his position.

Gordon's 1,581 total yards from scrimmage were the fifth-most in the NFL while his 1,105 rushing yards ranked seventh.  In the process, he became the first Charger since Ryan Mathews in 2013 to surpass 1,000 yards on the ground.  In addition, his 80 total first downs were tied for the third-most in the NFL while his 72 total points ranked fourth in the league among non-kickers.

Since being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Gordon has carried the ball 772 times for 2,743 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns in addition to 132 receptions for 1,087 yards and another six scores.  The Wisconsin product earned Pro Bowl honors in 2016 after rushing for 997 yards and 12 total touchdowns despite missing the final three games of the year.
