With Antonio Gates doubtful for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, the San Diego Chargers signed TE Asante Cleveland as insurance to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday. To make room, the team waived RB Andre Williams.
The 6-5, 260-pound tight end out of Miami initially joined the Bolts off waivers toward the end of the 2015 campaign and caught one pass this preseason for 11 yards. Cleveland played in 10 games with one start over his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots before landing in San Diego. He also appeared in 40 games with 10 starts in college with the Hurricanes from 2010-13, catching 14 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown.
Williams joined the Chargers on Sept. 4 off waivers from the New York Giants. The Chargers now have three running backs on the active roster in Melvin Gordon, Dexter McCluster and Kenneth Farrow.
