Los Chargers terminaron con el Draft de la NFL 2024 después de seleccionar al receptor abierto de Michigan, Cornelius Johnson, en la séptima ronda (No. 253) el sábado.
Johnson, la novena y última selección del draft de los Bolts, es el segundo exjugador de Michigan que se une al entrenador en jefe de los Chargers, Jim Harbaugh, en la NFL.
"Estoy muy emocionado de ver al entrenador Harbaugh y darle un gran abrazo," dijo Johnson. "Simplemente estoy emocionado de trabajar con él y comenzar a rodar en Los Ángeles."
Más tarde añadió: "Confío en él y me alegro de que haya confiado en mí con esta elección."
Los Chargers también seleccionaron al apoyador de Michigan, Junior Colson, en la tercera ronda. Harbaugh llevó a Michigan a un título nacional la temporada pasada antes de unirse a los Bolts.
Johnson llevaba su anillo de título nacional en su disponibilidad para los medios después de la selección.
La selección de Johnson les da a los Chargers aún más profundidad en la posición de receptor abierto, un grupo en el que seleccionaron a tres jugadores en este draft.
Los Bolts tienen a Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis y Simi Fehoko junto con las selecciones del draft de 2024, Ladd McConkey (segunda ronda), además de Brenden Rice y Johnson (ambos en séptima ronda).
Johnson, de 23 años, mide 6 pies 3 pulgadas y pesa 212 libras.
Johnson recibió la Mención de Honor All-Big Ten en 2023, ya que jugó en los 15 juegos con 14 aperturas. Logró 47 recepciones para 604 yardas y un touchdown.
Dijo que está aportando una sólida ética de trabajo a los Bolts tanto en la ofensiva como en los equipos especiales.
"Simplemente entrar desde el principio y retomar la ofensiva, seguir el libro de jugadas y robar repeticiones en la ofensiva y en los equipos especiales," dijo Johnson. "Sólo consigue repeticiones como pueda."
