The Los Angeles Chargers today elevated safety Tony Jefferson and linebacker Shaquille Quarterman from the practice squad for Sunday's game.
Jefferson has been a productive defender throughout his career, starting 67-of-113 career regular-season contests with the Cardinals, Ravens, 49ers and Giants. He's totaled 468 tackles (351 solo), 9.5 sacks, 34 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 24 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles and four recoveries. In his first season with Baltimore in 2017, Jefferson started all 16 contests, setting a career high with 2.5 sacks while adding 79 tackles and picking off a pass. A year later, he set a career high with six pass breakups in 14 starts. He has appeared in six career postseason contests, making four starts and recording 38 tackles (22 solo), three tackles for loss and a pair of passes defensed.
A native of Chula Vista, Calif., Jefferson played three season at the University of Oklahoma, where he burst onto the scene in 2010 and was named a Sporting News Freshman All-American along with Big 12 co-Defensive Freshman of the Year. He appeared in 40 games for the Sooners in three seasons (2010-12), posting 258 tackles (180 solo), eight interceptions, 13 pass breakups, seven sacks, a forced fumble and a recovery. Jefferson helped Oklahoma go 12-2 as a freshman, ending the season as Fiesta Bowl champions.
A 2020 fourth-round selection by Jacksonville, Quarterman appeared in 66 total games (64 regular season, two postseason, including the Week 1 victory with the Bolts. Over his career, Quarterman has totaled 29 tackles (16 solo), a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and 25 special teams tackles in the regular season, while also adding a defensive stop in the playoffs. He played collegiately for four seasons (2016-19) at Miami, appearing in 52 games for the Hurricanes and posting 292 tackles (182 solo), 13.0 sacks, an interception, 13 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and five recoveries. Quarterman was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection in 2018 and a second-team choice in 2017.
