Los Angeles Chargers punter/kicker Ty Long was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. The weekly accolade is a career first for Long and the first for a Chargers player in 2019.
Long was asked to do more than originally planned on Sunday in Week 1 against the Colts. The CFL transplant made three extra point attempts and a 40-yard field goal, finishing with six points on the day. With a 54-yard punt in the first half, he became the first player since Olindo Mare in 1997 to have a made field goal, made extra point and a punt in their career debut. The UAB product finished with an average of 49-yards on two punts on top of his kicking prowess.
The Chargers head to Detroit to face the Lions on Sunday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT from Ford Field.
