Los Chargers intercambiaron con los Patriots para comenzar la Ronda 2 y eligieron al receptor abierto de Georgia, Ladd McConkey, con la selección número 34 en el Draft de la NFL de 2024 el viernes por la noche.
Los Bolts enviaron los números 37 y 110 a Nueva Inglaterra a cambio de los números 34 y 137.
McConkey es un prospecto en los primeros 10 de receptor abiertos en el draft de este año.
Daniel Jeremiah de NFL Network clasificó a McConkey en el puesto 30, mientras que Dane Brugler de The Athletic lo tenia en el puesto 31.
Jeremiah ofreció el siguiente desglose de McConkey:
McConkey es un receptor ligeramente pequeño con excelente velocidad, rapidez y pulido. Se alinea tanto fuera como dentro de la ranura. Es rápido fuera de la línea y sabe cómo aprovechar la influencia de su hombre. Cambia de velocidad a lo largo de la ruta y es eficiente entrando y saliendo de las pausas. Utilizará movimientos de cabeza para vender rutas y crear separación. Tiene una excelente sensación para adaptarse al espacio versus la cobertura de zona. Tiene manos fuertes para agarrar los balones lanzados lejos de su cuerpo y es rápido en la transición por el campo. Después de la atrapada, confía en su rapidez para hacer fallar a los defensores. En general, McConkey no es tan físico como el ex receptor de los Seahawks, Doug Baldwin, pero veo muchas similitudes en sus instintos y rutas. Me imagino a McConkey teniendo una carrera similar.
La selección de McConkey les da a los Chargers profundidad en la sala de receptores y otra opción en el juego aéreo para el mariscal de campo Justin Herbert.
McConkey, de 22 años, mide 6 pies, 0 pulgadas y 186 libras.
McConkey ganó el Trofeo Wuerffel el año pasado, que honra al jugador "que mejor combina un servicio comunitario ejemplar con logros deportivos y académicos".
El receptor abierto tuvo 30 recepciones para 478 yardas (15.9 en promedio) y dos touchdowns en nueve juegos para los Bulldogs en 2023.
